This data set contains the bedrock-topography contour lines for the state of Ohio. This data set was created as part of a project to create the new state bedrock-geology map for Ohio. The contours come from a number of different sources, which include new mapping done at the 1:24,000 scale and existing mapping done at 1:24,000 and 1:62,500 scale. Existing county bedrock topography maps were photo-enlarged to 1:24,000 scale to match individual 7.5-minute quadrangles.
<purpose>This data set was originally developed as one of the essential elements to remapping the bedrock geology of Ohio. In the glaciated portion of the state, and in other areas of drift filled valleys, the bedrock surface is commonly buried beneath thick deposits of unconsolidated materials. Bedrock-topography maps allow the geologist to analyze the bedrock landscape beneath this covering of surficial deposits. All bedrock-topography map contours were originally drawn by hand for most of the 788 quadrangles in the state and later converted into digital files through the digitizing process.</purpose>

<vertaccr>The goal for mapping bedrock topography was to generate line work in which the accuracy of the lines was plus or minus one contour interval. Bedrock-topography contour intervals change from map to map and can change within a 7.5 minute-scale map as the geology and data require. Therefore, the one-contour interval rule varies quantitatively on a map-by-map basis.</vertaccr>
<qvertpa>
<vertaccv>Accuracy of plus or minus one contour interval was the goal of the program and needs to be assessed from map to map depending on the contour interval and data distribution. Common contour intervals used on the maps are 20 feet, and to a lesser extent 50 feet. Other contour intervals present on the bedrock-topography maps include 5, 10, 25, and 100 feet.</vertaccv>
